Ceremoniile MTV VMA 2017 au venit cu surprize. Vedeta serii a fost Kendrick Lamar.
Artistul Kendrick Lamar a intrat în ceremonia VMA 2017 cu 8 nominalizări şi a plecat acasă cu 6 premii. O premieră a acestei ediţii a fost că a fost schimbată denumirea trofeului din „Moonman” în „Moon Person”.
„De ce ar trebui să fie bărbat? Ar putea fi un bărbat, ar putea fi o femeie, ar putea fi transgender, ar putea fi nonconformist”, a declarat preşedintele MTV, Chris McCarthy, pentru New York Times.

Gestul serii de la VMA 2017 a venit de la Alessia Cara. În timp ce a cântat melodia „Scars to your beautiful”, aceasta şi-a şters machiajul de pe faţă. A fost unul dintre cele mai apreciate momente.
O supriză care a provocat numeroase reacţii pe reţelele de socializare a fost faptul că Despacito nu a câştigat la categoria „Melodia verii”. În schimbul acestei melodii a fost aleasă piesa „XO TOUR Llif3”, cântată de Lil Uzi Vert.
